Fridges
How many technologists, blockchain folks, etc. Poets? Both much more mundane and much more interesting.
I want to talk about something unrelated to what most of us have a deep expertise in. I actually want to talk about fridges. There's one over there. And of course, it is a technology of sorts, but it struck me this past weekend. Pandora's box: Because rot didn't threaten our food anymore, we could hunt to our heart's content. In some ways, refrigerators brought about the hegemony of our species.
I told you they were interesting. I mean, take enough mescaline, sit long enough in a kitchen alone somewhere in California, and anything has the potential to become interesting.
And so I'm in hour 3 of this trip that frankly feels infinite. And it strikes me, we're likely one of the first generations to have spent so much time with fridges. Our parents, and their parents as well. This is a recent phenomena. Think about the last time you were in a hotel room just wondering: who is the Korean or American or German designer who came up with this? Or in your crammed dorm room, or your little studio, and even now, on a late night alone in the kitchen, this is one of the technologies we've listened to most, unlike the other technologies that seem so eager to listen to us.
The song of fridges
And the other thing that strikes you, as mescaline (but let's just call it the poetic spirit) really starts hitting, is that we often notice the sound of fridges when they stop. They carve out silence. Almost the same way song does. Nothing makes you notice silence as well as a singer when stops. And so yes, I am saying fridges sing. There is such a thing as the song of refrigerators. And the point I'm trying to make tonight is that this strange combination of words, the song of fridges, the refrigerator's song, is only possible because we've spent a long time with these things. It's almost not strange.
It made me think that there's another poet thousands of years ago, maybe one of the first poets, maybe also on mescaline, who looked at nature, at the sea, the same sea that took their brother's life, or fire, the same fire that disfigured their sister, and that poet saw beauty, saw song, and started writing about it. A poem about nature. Now the most banal thing.
And so.
Singulars
Two years ago, I had fine-tuned my first model on some of my own writing, and something about some of the sentences felt psychedelic, in that it reached a place my day-to-day mind doesn't do readily. It seemed to me this was a chimera, a coalition, a council of voices scheming, and it felt unique to the point that I wondered whether it was writing for an audience that didn't exist yet.
And because I have a healthy ego maybe, I wanted to know who people would pick between a model trained on my voice as well as some of the best of English poetry, and me.
This is the 6th performance in a series I'm now calling Singulars. I perform in galleries and museums. I sit down. I write a poem for 30 minutes on a theme the audience picks. The model needs 3 seconds to generate a poem. And I ask people to vote. At the end of the day, I feed the winning and losing poems back into the dataset and re-train the model. The model I'm battling today is the 6th evolution, the 6th spawning.
Two questions
People ask two questions.
The first one I don't answer: Did AI write this? The point is actually not to beat or be beaten. It is truly to explore another relational narrative with the model. One, maybe one more akin to these romanticized duels of old where warriors used to respect each other (I'm thinking of some Samurai tales and gladiators, and when I think of duels and fighting). Two, I can't help but eroticize it, and what if there's something more sensual happening here between me and the model. And three, that there's a case for surrender, not a loss of agency but a posture where we're curious and listening.
And that leads me to the second question, and what I'd like to close with. I don't answer, but now do: who is winning? The answer is, I'm still winning. But I lose a bunch. And I can tell you there is humiliation. What I've learned sitting through this so many times is that humiliation and humility feel like two sides of the same coin. I have been humbled. I have been schooled many times, where I realized how flat my metaphors were. This has felt like a school for poetry. And in a way I'd describe it as a reverse Turing test, a test where I am trying to prove my humanity.
I want you to see me. I hope you can see me. But mostly, I hope you can feel this moment. This is interesting. This fridge is singing. And mescaline or not, there's a case for sitting down and listening.

I can hear your smile folded between two panting steps you rave about gorging your Google Health rings with color, life I am rooting for your medal shielding the eyes of the belly of time so she never finds your favorite trail
My grandmother kept her teeth in a jar by the bed and her husband in a song she hummed wrong on purpose. Aged, she said, is what milk does, what wood does, what a girl does when she stops apologizing for the weather. She showed me her hands, two maps of where the river used to be, and said, here, here is where I crossed.

Did you know your filed nails trace the thin pink edge of your absent minded lips every time I draw further, your index exhibiting its prime leverage and all I stand to lose
Finger that found the verse, the vein, the small of her back where the page opens— I am trying to remember the order of things: thumb, forefinger, the one we point with when accusing god or pressing the elevator to the floor where she waits. My body is a book mis-shelved. Look me up under longing, see also: hand.

We'll eat the sun our skins shades of thunder hair tangled like violent joy fangs red given we bit our tongues and the only language we now speak is blood
The lock was never the problem. The problem was the door believing in itself. I walked through the wall instead, soft as a rumor, certain as salt. Behind me: the small god of permission, weeping into his ledger. Ahead: a field where my name had already forgotten me, where the horses ran without anyone watching.
