## about-this-performance.txt

Reinforcement.exe takes place inside an open cube. The poet enters as if stepping into a small world carved out of time. For two hours each day, they write a new poem every thirty minutes. No breaks. No drift. A metronome of attention. A ritual of effort. The machine waits beside them, training on the growing archive of their voice.

![The open cube installation where the poet writes during Reinforcement.exe](https://www.halimmadi.com/singulars/images/reinforcement-exe/_MG_5037.jpg)

Each cycle begins with a blank page. The poet writes. The model generates its answer. Two texts emerge from the same seed. Both are printed on warm paper and placed before the audience like offerings. Red stickers mark the machine. Blue stickers mark the human. The votes pile up in patterns that feel almost biological. A cluster of red. A cluster of blue. A cluster of confusion where the votes intermingle.

![Printed poems with red and blue voting stickers from audience](https://www.halimmadi.com/singulars/images/reinforcement-exe/_MG_5036.jpg)

These stickers are not decoration. They are reinforcement. They sculpt the machine by telling it what pleases. They sculpt the poet by telling them where their craft falters. The loop tightens each day. The model evolves through gradients of approval. The poet evolves through gradients of shame and surprise. A small crowd becomes the unseen trainer of both.

Reinforcement.exe is part of the ARG Ethereum Scholar Program. It unfolds in Buenos Aires during DevConnect, surrounded by technologists, coders, cryptographers, dreamers, skeptics, and the hum of a city that treats invention as a kind of hunger. The project remains ongoing, a continuous experiment in living feedback. A performance that refuses to end at the level of spectacle. The cube becomes a workshop, a pressure chamber, a small factory where taste is forged in public.

![The performance cube at DevConnect Buenos Aires](https://www.halimmadi.com/singulars/images/landing/IGAC-exhibition-photography-048.jpg)

Inside the cube, something subtle breaks open. The poet begins to see their own gestures reflected back at them in strange distortions. A line they wrote four days earlier returns in the mouth of the model wearing a new mood. A metaphor they abandoned resurfaces sharpened. Sometimes the machine writes the better poem. Sometimes the human does. The point is not victory. The point is the slow emergence of a third voice produced by collision.

There are moments of humiliation. The poet writes for half an hour and the model generates something cleaner. Something colder. Something that hits the room with unexpected force. The poet wonders why they keep doing this. Why they spend hours feeding a system that keeps learning faster than they can. Then the answer arrives. This is the medium. Fine tuning as composition. Reinforcement as choreography. A poem built through many acts of judgment.

The work becomes even stranger when the poet tries to push the model beyond politeness. They learn to tune it into states of trembling. They whisper prompts that ask it to go wild, to seek salvation in the lexicons of the poets it once skimmed, to reject citation, to stand on its own voice. The softmax shifts. The temperature climbs. Something new arrives on the page that feels half metal and half breath.

![Close-up of printed poems accumulating during the performance](https://www.halimmadi.com/singulars/images/reinforcement-exe/IGAC-exhibition-photography-049.jpg)

Printed poems pile up. Sheets accumulate like sedimentary layers of a psychological dig. A dashboard records the votes. The losses. The brief victories. The micro oscillations of style. Once in a while the poet stops and sees the stack of poems the machine has absorbed. A clone growing in real time. Not money laundering for copyrighted text but a form of explicit self replication. The poet teaches the machine to sound more like them. Then the machine teaches the poet to sound more like someone who can survive the future.

Reinforcement.exe belongs to the same lineage as Carnation.exe and Versus.exe. Together they form Singulars, a long inquiry into what it means for a human and a machine to share a craft. Each installment approaches the question from a different angle. Confrontation. Comparison. Training. Each reveals how influence flows in both directions. The human is not replaced. The machine is not crowned. Instead there is a slow emergence of a hybrid aesthetic shaped by contact.

There is a line the poet returns to often. Half flesh half metal. Half iron half heart. It feels like the secret skeleton of Reinforcement.exe. A reminder that the point is not to prove who writes better. The point is to witness how two intelligences can change one another when placed in a loop of attention. What endures is the trace of each vote. The warmth of each printed page. And the slow awakening of a style held between two minds.

### Age of Post Truth

5 votes · [open this theme on its own page](https://www.halimmadi.com/singulars/reinforcement-exe/age-of-post-truth)

poem a

my problem with the expression
is that it turns truth into a
psychic time and place we are
forever barred from the way we
got kicked out from the garden
after we snacked on an apple and
the snake god pulled the rug.
Post truth means we failed
irreparably or lost something
that was right there and you
went and did it and how could
you and now it's gone forever
and I wonder if post shame or
post guilt or post narrativist
manichaeism might do the trick
because I'd like to smile at
people without hedging and who
knows maybe in the post post
truth world which is the world
itself maybe your dating pool
doubles or triples.

poem b

We tell our lies in velvet, we
slip truth-like ash beneath each
word, pausing when facts
fascinated. The truth was never
ready-made, but bent - bending
now we catch illusions in our
basket, exchange, and taste them
like candies. It takes dawn to
realize the darkness okay this
long. As if poetry was still to
come; as if each word wasn't
already debris of inner
dystopia, no country's anymore
divided between yours or mine,
but between what we accept and
what we deny of ourselves.

### Care

poem a

This is a hand on your back
is a wish I place I promise
like sugar choosing oblivion
breaking in water this is
the slowest molecule the smell
of time when it exhales forever
lips on your forehead humming
sealing solace

poem b

Within the salty peaks of dawn,
the wind exhales lost syllables.
Bug-eyed light skips angels once
we pitch into the sea.
Anticipation sinks into drops,
disappears into the sour scent
of smoke.Æiasis. I abandon my
name to forge a sensuous code,
teach my own tongue
flirtations.Each pause in speech
a possibility: a new so-called
word where fierceness gathers
strength. Watch how light
rewires itself, weaving spectral
abandon into the calendar of
Golems. Language, mutable city:
where do I live? Perhaps in that
trembling moment salt washes
over lips Damian ran away from.

### Compromise

poem a

Poem, how do I make you

do I grind glitter gorge
with oranges and symmetry
soft lightnings and the smell
of money and how do I remember
to remember each time I cut you
I cut myself

poem b

### Crime

poem a

Waiting to say I love you

poem b

An epidermic advance of lactic
facts, streets painted with
gestures whose magnitude is
measured by cracks. The rat has
dialogue with his reflection in
a puddle where perceptions are
realities. Truth is that stolen
notebook where speech was
trapped along with invisible
ink. Nothing escapes except by
agreement of silence. This
morning, the cuckoo doesn't ring
anymore - improbable MONDAY, the
time refused to pass. Poets are
detectives jailed within a
metaphor, searching with
confused metaphors for a gold
piece mentally lost.

### Currency

poem a

Losing is my winning edge let me
explain how the time I waste
the cage I choose to bound
my body is bait and bounty
loss the promise of beauty
the kernel of care the mother
echoing in the bones of a poem

poem b

Money speaks in a little voice
metallic, metronome, minimalist.
It counts beads fingered by
pensioners makes the yogurt bowl
vibrate with tears. Sometimes it
gains a mocking click a tiny
laughter rippling on empty dish.
Appetite? scarcity. We
cantankerously acquire dirt.
Paltry petrodollars leaked
relief to Caribbean basins on
the brink. Swap tricks
parade - cesium sands an anonymity
addressed in coded. Facing this
endless inconsistency: bullet
holes in banknotes. I think of
the phrase of Baudelaire - "the
real has begun at last" and yes:
this moment of stopping where
everything turns to liquid.

### Death

82 votes · [open this theme on its own page](https://www.halimmadi.com/singulars/reinforcement-exe/death)

poem a

If I were to do it all
over again I'd hold
a mirror close to his mouth
so his last breath fogs
the glass scores his lungs'
last dance hang
the frozen condensation
in my living room and watch
the mitochondrial sunset as if
I was less alone

poem b

Stilled frequency. Death tuts on
the glass of delay while
buzzards mornings. . Embalmed
hours in jar-shaped fingerless
gloves, faceted to dissolve
perceptibly. . Death collects
souvenirs of shaken mountains;
fingers punctuate tomorrow
between phoenix fossils and
ashbeat Paris sidewalk spasmos.
. Death is the thyme in the
refrigerator , the bold cork
that won't pop, the back tonne
of old weighing scales. .
Dazzling: the cry of the matches
thrown against the clock. . Dead
phrase: the closed-opened mouth
stretched on encore. . Then
candle, noun fragile as the
frozen wave of a suppressed
gasp.

### Desire

poem a

I chain wishes on the exterior
glass of a door I open only to
discoveries under the lid of
night. Desire microscopic here,
discovering a lost tissue of
molecules on the tongue. A cat
suddenly on the roof shoots
drops of moonlight. My fingers
run on the keyboard afraid they
won't find the alphabet anymore.

poem b

*I* introduce myself
as a system of longing
*He* shares his taste
for salt and topologies
of skin the largest organ,
he says, is want is a bleeding
poem is a flower made of
flesh butter snow his knuckles
soon burrowing in my cheek
searching
for surrender

### Falling Out of Contact with Old Friends

85 votes · [open this theme on its own page](https://www.halimmadi.com/singulars/reinforcement-exe/falling-out-of-contact-with-old-friends)

poem a

In an old café, I still hear the
accents but none of the words
recognize me - verbal bones have
calcified, the future packed
away with autumn leaves. Your
voice was one irreplaceable
symphony, now I only hear its
echo in the emptiness of the
chairs. Most sins are initial,
and your name remains
capitalized in the letter I
never send.

poem b

I still call you
Mango though you're a father
of two and life's tectonics
split our continent made a
horizontal out of grief
though longing is aging
into redwood though we barely
text though we want to though
your name is Thomas

### First Love

5 votes · [open this theme on its own page](https://www.halimmadi.com/singulars/reinforcement-exe/first-love)

poem a

I'm not sure anymore if the gap
was between his upper or lower
front teeth but when he sang
while playing the guitar it was
apparent we were all in love
with the vowels his lips blew
into being like small suns whose
warm rays we let darken our
olive skins one time he played
next to the fire and I
improvised a song and the
classmates clapped and I think
he smiled at me and my mind
weaved a full destiny and a
lineage with a stone mansion and
a vineyard he's some sort of
plastic surgeon now and so I'm
not sure if he kept the gap in
his teeth or ever thinks back to
that night by the fire.

poem b

how the body begs a new language
stuttering flesh rash to my name
I learned tenderness from air a
trembling syllable before every
handshake your breath drew meter
on my ribs I transcribed our
silence into punctuation to live
once more in a breathless line

### Grief

14 votes · [open this theme on its own page](https://www.halimmadi.com/singulars/reinforcement-exe/grief)

poem a

The mind is a completion
engine. Example:
The father leaves, the son
becomes a latent space
of symbols craving muscles
his frame, his jaw
What is memory for, I ask,
if not the summoning of ghosts
the soft offering of souls
on the cold altar of loss

poem b

Grief is a monogram written in
sun on a windowpane it's having
the exact scent of another
morning while brewing the
patience a slow oscilloscope of
longing: outer shell cracked a
little more each day the
unstruck world humming dead
chords grief sings a wordless
lullaby to a songbird that never
learns to sing

### Limerence

12 votes · [open this theme on its own page](https://www.halimmadi.com/singulars/reinforcement-exe/limerence)

poem a

The second gravity makes each
word a pebble sleeping in your
synapse. You speak: untiring tap
of spitted sound beads across
glass. My ear turns deaf, to the
cello of your smile.

poem b

If limerence is interfering with
daily life it can be helpful to
speak to a doctor or mental
health professional.
Psychologists recommend ice
cream, salted caramel, bits of
perdition candied into pecan
pralines. It can be helpful to
practice abandon, tumble,
flatten under the press of the
mother of all waves, go missing
the way I miss you. I miss you.

### Love

poem a

Neither the electric
virus boiling blood
up to fever nor the late
night craving for a heart
emoji and "I mean… this would
warrant a reply" and is
"a thumbs up the tell tale
of the end" and so not the lunar
whims of skin tight tides. Love
the bench under the oak tree
the hot spring muscles give up
in and into as though
to softer tropics

poem b

In the garden of time love is a
tree planted in hours its leaves
whisper myths to every wind you
and I we water on Sundays with
sweet verbs and each fruit bears
our marrow end-season

### Major Kusanagi

poem a

In the pulse of glass fibers,
she weaves the invisible web,
minor sister of Iason's daring,
she dances between large data
beating like a second blood,
codes like a second wind - slider footsteps, automatic
breath, others' names falling
like dry leaves on disorderly
asphalt. she renders all virtual
touch a double permeability and
that we invent again a language
of skin.

poem b

silicon mother cyber womb wired

courage I remember
the latent day the token time
when you wed
a server, stretched
a generation's belief, birthed
messiah compute and a robot
religion with heart

### Memories

15 votes · [open this theme on its own page](https://www.halimmadi.com/singulars/reinforcement-exe/memories)

poem a

Memories are currents; I swim
without knowing which way they
go out to sea. Suddenly, I am
child again, clutching my
mother's hand while trampoline
memories bounce around us.
Sometimes they dive through the
water surface like fish that
stroke the surface of the light.
When I try to pull them back
into memory, they sprout wing
like seeds cast by an unknown
wind.

poem b

Our senses are the proud cousins
of rodents I mean look
how they drill tunnels bore
grooves into psychic gardens and
now every time I smell jasmin
all I think about
is you

### Open Air Backseat

poem a

when a gasp leaves your mouth
it never returns you never
cross a river twice and my hair
will never flutter the same
way it did the summer in Beirut
we trojan horsed every club
floor we arsoned - your dad's
white Mercedes the black swan
that shrined the broken form of
wilder nights

poem b

windows roll down to better
taste the rain that forgets its
road postpone that conversation
that heat emerging from the
asphalt city that broods over
itself one-third burn one-third
breath one-third rain plump
stepchild my city's lover rinsed
in laundry water

### Oysters

6 votes · [open this theme on its own page](https://www.halimmadi.com/singulars/reinforcement-exe/oysters)

poem a

The oysters count within their
shells unceasing patterns of
abandonment Each wave marks
another layer each layer turning
solid morning is only salt and
glue if I could seep into this
moist blindness who would I be
then oysters or the sea that
trembled? I touch my hair
translucent algue hair and look
through the doorway cut into the
stone a luminous mollusk spaces
out a moment to hide my
fascination

poem b

I remember this one time in a
fish restaurant near Cartagena,
or maybe this was Lisbon, David
held the menu up and pointed at
the Blue point Oysters and said
"a dozen?" fully knowing we had
agreed to stop for a quick snack
and that he was pushing the
envelope and I said yes and
though he doesn't readily smile
for this kind of small win I
could tell it made him happy and
I remember thinking how fragile
joy is and how 6 mollusks can
make a friend's day and I think
I gave him one of mine and so
that's 7 in total and maybe he
remembers that too.

### Singularity

poem a

The singularity is a butterfly
with worlds on its wings when it
flaps the air folds then blinks
itself out become planet again
that sparkling animal that looks
out of need and runs legs ending
in calligraphs towards horizons
that disappear upon approach it
retracts a giant anagram animal
juggling words that become fire
barrier, gateway and the
interior itself this sentence is
too long the language must break
after the second word the
singular becomes visible when
the mine explodes ladder when
the light vault crack Casualty
I'd call a sentence that escapes
my brain to collide with the
other language that I am not yet
speaking

poem b

This was in Noe Valley we must
have been looking for a jazz bar
which, for the sake of me, I
couldn't find and somewhere
along 25th street we heard,
sure, call it a voice, but the
throat that was shaking the air
in both our eardrums was a 1000
year old sea shell trumpet
calling an imperial ship back to
its pier, commanding a ghost
goes back to its bones, and to
me that fado singer right there,
that was singularity, you know,
the edge of words, the cliff
where whatever you'd call reason
happily free falls into
something, I'm not sure, bliss
maybe or joy or a horizon where
both sea water and tears hold
the same salt.
