The jaguar is a metaphor
A way to visualize
Your oomph
Silent
Patient
And ready to leap

There is something unapologetic
About the stance of the big cats
It is pride laced with irreverence
A kind of arrogance
A brand of defiance
A flavor of scandal

"The flight of the jaguar" was published a few months ago thanks to a community of friends who supported it. It's a short collection of poems.

The jaguar, it is me

This story starts on an old rough rickety ragged carpet somewhere East of Reno. Maybe West. The wind is blowing and the dust is being a cutie today tickling the insides of everyone's nose and generally making people feel miserable. The misery's short lived  because the drumming shaman is asking people laying down to go through their portal and summon their power animal.

I'm not sure what is happening but for some reason my father's car is blitzing through the mental scenery. I lost my dad when I was 4. He was a snazzy man. According to my mum. I barely knew Georges (my dad). I have a couple of mental pictures: One of him peeing and one of him rolling me on the carpet in the living room.

An old rough rickety ragged carpet. And then one more. Of the two of us, riding in his old burgundy Jaguar. Trying to start it with the key. And then reaching under the steering wheel for the two electric cables. An electric burgundy Jaguar. Just like the animal that had just appeared.

The jaguar, it is you

Jaguars - and power animals in general - are a metaphor for our power. They're very handy in times of doubt or crisis. They're a more mystical version of our childhood imaginary friends. They're also real. If we will them to be. Just like our childhood imaginary friends. And that our minds can conjure a reality where a power animal can prop us up in the middle of a sad day is proof that we can summon our power at will.

Or not. Most likely not. Sometimes we need the hand of a friend on our back to remember things will be ok. And so "Flight of the Jaguar" is a birthday gift (my birthday's on the 1st of November) to friends, family and whoever stumbles on this page. It's a friend's hand on your (and my future self's) back. Everything will be ok.

Who am I?

I grew up in Beirut (Lebanon), studied in Paris and Toronto, then worked in London and Sao Paulo before coming to San Francisco 3 years ago. I started writing poetry when I was 15 (I'm turning 30 this year) and published a poetry book in French at 17 called "Ricochets". Poetry has always felt like a playground where language can be bent and shaped to mean something it usually isn't meant to. When that dissonance happens, a small firework of beauty and delight goes off somewhere in the world. I also love dancing!

This project & my work

"Flight of the jaguar" is a collection of 30 illustrated poems. I've already written and shared some of the ones I'd like to have in the book (check out my Instagram account - @madihg).
